One of the most exciting moments in baseball is when a player steps up to the plate with the bases loaded. The anticipation, the pressure, and the potential for a grand slam are all palpable. On Monday night, Hunter Renfroe had that opportunity, and he delivered, hitting a pinch-hit grand slam to carry the San Diego Padres over the Cincinnati Reds, 6-3.
Renfroe's heroics came in the top of the ninth inning, with the game tied at 2-2. The Padres had loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter, and Renfroe was sent up to pinch hit for Alex Dickerson. On a 2-2 count, Reds reliever Raisel Iglesias threw a hanging slider, and Renfroe crushed it to left-center field, clearing the bases and giving the Padres a 6-2 lead.
It was a dramatic moment, and it was made even sweeter by the fact that Renfroe has been struggling lately. He had been benched for three games in a row, and was hitting just .176 with one home run and one RBI in his last 16 games. But in that one swing of the bat, he erased all of that and gave the Padres a much-needed boost.
The Padres had squandered several opportunities earlier in the game, leaving 12 runners on base and going 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. But Renfroe's grand slam made up for all of that, and the Padres were able to hold on for the win.
It was a good night all around for the Padres, who got a strong start from left-hander Eric Lauer. Lauer pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out five. He was helped by a great defensive play by third baseman Manny Machado in the fourth inning, when Machado made a diving stop and throw to first to rob Joey Votto of a hit.
The Padres' bullpen also did its job, with three relievers combining to pitch three scoreless innings. Closer Kirby Yates came in to pitch the ninth inning with a three-run lead, and although he gave up a solo home run to Eugenio Suarez, he was able to close out the game and earn his 29th save of the season.
The win was a much-needed one for the Padres, who had lost six of their previous seven games. They improved to 49-55 on the season, and avoided falling into last place in the National League West.
For the Reds, the loss was a tough one, as they had taken a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Suarez. But they were unable to hold on, and fell to 48-54 on the season.
Overall, it was a thrilling game with a great moment for Renfroe and the Padres. They'll look to build on this win as they continue their series against the Reds on Tuesday night.
